(Zuo Qi is a mainly Black Miao village
located in Min Gu township, Zhenfeng county about 3km from Zhenfeng itself
in Guizhou province, south west China.)
These photos were taken on a visit to
Zuo Qi village in October 2000. Although the village is mainly Black
Miao, Bouyei also farm the land around and we saw some in the village.
The Black Miao have migrated from the Kaili region in the south east of
Guizhou. At the time of our visit it was the height of the rice
harvest with most of the population working in the fields or the men away
working elsewhere. A small group of young girls and one or two older
women were dressed in their festival clothes to greet us, clapping small
stools and then danced for us. Afterwards sticky rice was prepared
mainly by some young men and shared with us and the Black Miao.
We were then taken up to the main village and had a demonstration of weaving
complex woven plain cloth for the women's aprons and embroidery.
Afterwards we were able to buy some of their beautiful fine textiles.
