detail of an embroidered Ge Jia baby carrier, originally from Huangping
county, Guizhou province, in the collection of Andrew Dudley which was
purchased in Kaili in 1997. On the forum Andrew said: "Here is
a baby carrier that still has its original 1930-1940 (probably) colours.
Unfortunately, the maker missed one line of inner bordering on the lower
piece of tubu (hand spun and woven) cloth which elongates the
lower groups of butterflies and spoils the overall effect. Still, it's
useful to see what the colours on Bill's two old baby carriers (shown
left and right below) would have looked like." |

Andrew's complete Ge Jia embroidered baby carrier - detail shown above - is originally from Huangping county, Guizhou province. It is in a similar design to Bill's and has still retained its original colours from the second quarter of the 20th century. |
