Jpeg 89K GJ01 An embroidered Ge Jia baby carrier from the collection of Bill Hornaday. About 12 years ago Bill found this baby carrier in Bangkok and bought it knowing nothing about it. He had previously not been exposed to Miao textiles from China and was so inspired by it that he immediately flew to China. These Ge Jia embroideries are now some of Bill's favourites and, as he says, there is something 'both beautiful and powerful' about them.

An embroidered Ge Jia baby carrier from the collection of Bill Hornaday purchased in 1994. Bill found the carrier in Bangkok and bought it knowing nothing about it. He had previously not been exposed to Miao textiles from China and was so inspired by it that he immediately flew to China. These Ge Jia embroideries are now some of Bill's favourites.

Andrew Dudly at first thought that this baby carrier of Bill's might be a new one as he has seen "several modern copies over the last couple of years that have a similar overall design and apparent 'faded' colouring to this one." However, "Since Bill says carrier 1 (shown above) was bought 12 years ago, it has to be original, as no self respecting Ge Jia would have made copies to cheat the public in those days, in which case, it would probably be classified as one of those dating to about 100 years ago" - say early in the first quarter of the 20th century.

Detail of the Bill's Ge Jia embroidered baby carrier above, probably from early in the first quarter of the 20th century.
Andrew Dudley posted this embroidered detail from a sleeve in his collection: "I've just gone through my sleeves and come up with this one that is quite similar in style to Bill's carrier 1." Andrew purchased the sleeve from a Kaili dealer in 1998 and it has been variously dated as between 70 and 110 years old - say first quarter of the 20th century.
Andrew Dudley's Ge Jia embroidered baby carrier, originally from Huangping county, Guizhou province is in a similar design to Bill's and has still retained its original colours from the second quarter of the 20th century. Andrew purchased his carrier in Kaili in 1997.
