This is a Ge Jia embroidered sleeve from Andrew Dudley's collection which was probably made in the 20th century and is similar in style to a Ge Jia embroidered baby carrier in the collection of Bill Hornaday (number 1) and shown in the thumbnails below on the left and centre..

Andrew looked out the sleeve following a discussion with Bill about the age of the Ge Jia baby carrier number 1 which Bill had posted on the forum. Andrew initially thought that the baby carrier was a new one as he had seen "several modern copies over the last couple of years that have a similar overall design and apparent 'faded' colouring to this one." Bill, however, had purchased the baby carrier 12 years before and felt that it was an old one. Based on the knowledge that Bill bought the carrier12 years before, Andrew said that "it has to be original, as no self respecting Ge Jia would have made copies to cheat the public in those days, in which case, it would probably be classified as one of those dating to about 100 years ago."

to Jpeg 89K GJ01 An embroidered Ge Jia baby carrier from the collection of Bill Hornaday. About 12 years ago Bill found this baby carrier in Bangkok and bought it knowing nothing about it. He had previously not been exposed to Miao textiles from China and was so inspired by it that he immediately flew to China. These Ge Jia embroideries are now some of Bill's favourites and, as he says, there is something 'both beautiful and powerful' about them.
