De Wo market

(De Wo township is situated in Longlin County, Guangxi province, south west China.  Side Comb Miao, with a population of around 4,000, are the majority ethnic group but there are other Miao groups living in villages around who may visit the 6 day market)

These photos were taken in early October 2000 at the 6 day rotating market in De Wo township after a morning visit to Long Dong Side Comb Miao village. It was a very busy market full of traders and buyers which drew on a population from many villages around including from other townships.  The predominate group were Side Comb Miao but a group of Flower Miao had been specially invited to come to the market to meet us and to sell us their textiles.  They had come from their village in Zhu Chang township, 16km from De Wo and involving a 3 hour walk and a 5km bike ride.  They were joined by Red Hat Miao and/or Clean Water Miao who had come from a village 8 km from De Wo involving a 1 1/2 hour walk.  We also saw some White Miao.
