1.    Michael C Howard and Kim Be Howard, Textiles of the Southern Thai of Viet Nam, published in The Textile Museum Journal 1999-2000. The Journal is available from The Textile Museum, Washington (http://www.textilemuseumshop.org/)

I am indebted to this detailed and informative paper for bringing alive for me my photographs from 1995 and the textiles which I purchased in a village in the Mai Chau district (probably Ban Lac) as well as textiles purchased and photographed in an earlier visit to a tiny shop in Hanoi's old town in 1994.  My regret is that I was unable to spend longer in Mai Chau and did not have this knowledge to truly appreciate at the time what I was seeing.  The comments given with the photo enlargements are all based on the text and photos in the Howard paper plus my own subsequent observations from the textiles I purchased.

2. Michael C Howard and Kim Be Howard, Textiles of the Daic Peoples of Vietnam, Studies in the Material Cultures of Southeast Asia No. , published by White Lotus Press, 2002. This is the first of three volumes by the authors surveying the textiles of the highland peoples of Vietnam. The research for the book started in 1995 and the article referred to in 1. above was a preliminary study.
