(Ma Wo is a White Miao village located in Zhe Lang township, in the south-west of Longlin County, 18 km from Longlin in Guangxi Province, south west China)These photos were taken on a visit to Ma Wo village in October 2000 during the holiday week following Chinese National Day. The village is a White Miao village and the population on the day of our visit was swollen by White Miao from several villages around Ma Wo turning our visit into a festival. As it was the holiday week the men who might normally be away from the village working were home and able to join in. There were some Flower Miao who trekked in to join in the textile market. The villagers were very obviously not used to seeing Western visitors and found us as fascinating as we found them. The women had been organised to show us many of the stages in the process of making the festival clothing - in particular the stages in hemp or ramie production through to cloth weaving and embroidery and appliqué sewing techniques. all text & images © Pamela A Cross
