News of an exhibition at the Harris Museum in Preston, Lancashire, UK which is generating quite a buzz: Global threads: Asian Textiles and Fashion Today 14 May 2011 – 30 June 2012. Global Threads is a ground-breaking new fashion exhibition co-curated by young people from Lancashire. It mixes historic South Asian textiles with today’s catwalk, high street and student fashion.

The exhibition is inspired by a beautiful 18-volume set of fabric sample books – The Textile Manufactures of India – given to Preston in 1866. Many of the patterns, materials and techniques found in this collection are still in use today. Young curators have brought together a truly exclectic mix of men’s and women’s wear – from George at Asda to Dries Van Noten – to show how even the latest trentds reflect a global textile culture. You’ll also find photography by Gavin Fernandes and artwork from Shezad Dawood. See a video of stills from the show. I thought this video was excellent, it will enlarge to full screen and gives a real feel of being within the exhibit so that, even if you cannot get to visit it is still possible to experience something of it.

Young people have catalogued and photographed all 700 fabric samples in The Textile Manufactures of India. You can explore them on this website:
