I would like to share information on a book, Heartbeats from the Taiwan Indigenous Loom published by the Chinese Textiles and Clothing Culture Center, Department of Textiles and Clothing at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan which I have just received. It is actually a catalogue of an exhibition at the University which opened in March 2010 (I cannot find info as to whether the exhibition has now finished or not).
The exhibition and the catalogue represents a tribute to the efforts of the Department of Textiles and Clothing at Fu Jen Catholic University over 35 years to preserve the material culture - in particular the textiles and clothing - of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan.
I found the text quite inspiring - of the efforts over such a long period - initially bleak and dispiriting but then developing into somewhat of triumph through training and encouragement of indigenous weavers. There are some very good quality photos, mainly weavings but also some embroidery, of different indigenous groups in Taiwan. There is Chinese and English text with most of the Chinese translated into English.
ISBN 978-986-6922095-4, price NT$600.
