Today I discovered a new Chinese minority technique book and I thought I would share it with forum members. It is 'Chinese Braid Embroidery' by Jacqui Carey and can be obtained from The Carey Company who specialise in Kumihimo (Japanese braidmaking). For purchase info on the book see: http://www.careycompany.com/chinese%20braid.html The book is only very recently published. Today I briefly saw a copy of the book and spoke to two people who helped Jacqui with her research for the book - Gina Corrigan whose textiles she studied and who organised a research trip for her to S W China and Martin Conlan of Slow Loris who also gave Jacqui access to his collection for minute study and research. The book looked great with detailed technique description and diagrams plus numerous photos including many of minority textiles. I have come home, searched out the info and placed my order!

It is very humbling to see how groups like the Miao create their textiles - the thread for the cloth or embroidery; weave thread; embroider with and on it; and create braids with it which are then used to create texture and design. Today I was at the Knitting and Stitching show at Alexandra Palace in London and saw the 'Miao Embroidery' exhibit from Gina Corrigan's collection http://www.tribaltextiles.info/communit ... php?t=1009 and some nice pieces that Martin had in his Slow Loris booth. I never cease to be amazed and humbled when I see some of the very fine craftsmanship - and often art - which has been produced. It is excellent that we are now seeing some technique books appearing which, rather than dispel the sense of wonder, enhance it.
