I was very pleased yesterday to see that the forum had gained a new member, yuanzhumin. My excitement related to the website given,
www.formosatribal.com (see
http://www.tribaltextiles.info/communit ... php?t=1027 for my forum alert to this website last July - thanks to forum member Mark Johnson's July 07 email news).
I have been looking again at this excellent website on the culture of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan via the Yang-Grevot Collection. It really is a great website full of information and very well presented. I was particularly struck today by the section of the site which acts as a catalogue of the Yang-Grevot collection. See
http://www.formosatribal.com/catalogue.php for the catalogue home page,
http://www.formosatribal.com/all.php?group=4 for a tribal group's home page and then
http://www.formosatribal.com/show.php?item_id=132 for an example of an individual group's textile.
This is a very sophisticated presentation of a collection and I am not suggesting that this is something that we can all attain. Clearly a lot of thought and, no doubt, refining over time, has gone into the presentation as we see it today. However, I think that it is a very helpful way of reviewing our own collections and how we gather and present information on them. It could even be worth, even if only on one's own computer, setting up a catalogue which can be browsed on a web browser. I say this glibly having worked in an amateur way with web software for more than 8 years and still being 'challenged' by it!
I hope that we will have the chance to 'meet' yuanzhumin (Nicolas Grevot) on the forum. And yes, I did ask him if he would mind if I publicly welcomed him to the forum, drew your attention to his site and, in particular, to the way in which he is presenting the catalogue of the collection on-line - to which he graciously and promptly agreed. Many thanks!
