Hey people, just thought I'd share some pics of a couple of ikats I acquired in Nggela village in 1992...not handspun thread but look to be mainly vegetable dyes. The weavers there back then were still using a lot of veg dyes but I didn't see much handspun thread. A stunningly beautiful part of the world and the ikat motifs of Nggela are amongst the most intricate that I've come across in my travels of NTT. Back then you just about got mobbed, as you walked into the village, by the women flaunting their weavings....and then they'd set up camp outside the losmen with all these beautiful ikat pieces draped over the front fence and in stacks on the ground....it was like being a kid in a lolly shop !!! I wonder if it's anything like that now. Lots of their fare was straight off the loom, mint, hadn't even been washed yet.
