Hi all, Here are photos of a mystery textile I hope someone can help me identify. It is said to be from an old Indonesian collection but I have never really seen anything quite like it from Indonesia.
It seems to be raw silk which reminds me of Biduk textiles from the Pasemah Highlands of Sumatra, but they are usually weft brocade and sometimes weft ikat. Benkulu and Lampung also come to mind but again their textiles are weft oriented while this textile has patterns in the warp.
I don't know much about woven pattern techniques but research on the net leads me to believe this textile has been produced using a warp-faced compound tabby weave.
The blue and white, warp patterned stripes seem to be complementary with the same pattern on both sides in opposite colors. The plain stripes seem to be some kind of double weave with the red warps appearing on the face and the white warps on the reverse. The textile was in the form of a Tapis or Sarong but has been opened. It is 121 X 127 cen.
Any information on where this textile was produced, how it was woven or similar examples would be greatly appreciated. Best regards and season's greetings to all. MAC
