A recent interest sparked from an ever-increasing collection of tea-associated paraphenalia has seen the purchasing of Japanese obi or sashes worn by women and men. I show a Fukuro obi, worn by women and traditionally regarded as being a degree lower in formality than the Maru obi.
This obi is possibly not as expensive as some other obi - being covered in brocade for just under 3m before being formed from black silk alone. I have no idea of the age of this particular obi (which measures 30cm by 390cm) which appears strikingly modern in design and lavish in it's use of gold thread. The same brocade appears again on the last 60cm. The entire back is formed from a very heavy black silk.
